A is for Johny

As the 1st January sets the tone for the whole year, that is the way things work for us teachers in the beginning of the new school year, in September...So what are the New Year Resolutions for us? A school year full of laughter and cheerfulness, a classroom community without problems and accidents, and a handful of resources that will prove to be inspiring!
What is a better way to start than with "Johny Appleseed"!! A legend with a warm heart, however a man that really existed, who planted seeds -the way we do for our students- and wanted those seeds to grow into the best apple orchards. I can totally identify with Johny as a teacher (although I can't imagine myself with a tin pot on my head and a sack as an outfit!! Too much a fashion victim to do that!), hoping my students for this year will manage to turn the seeds into the most wonderful apple trees!
Happy new school year everyone!

A Halloween Lesson plan featuring Mr.Bean

Get your students' attention with a spooky lesson plan! Introduce the theme of Halloween to your students to derive any information they might have on the subject.

Before Watching : A short text on how it all started and comprehension questions on it would do the trick!     http://www.5minuteenglish.com/oct29.htm
Then the students are ready to watch Mr.Bean's Spooky Cartoon....

While watching : The students can check a list of Halloween vocabulary provided by the teacher to spot the items in the film. Suggested vocabulary : Frankenstein, haunted house, spider, skull, monster, blood, thunder, vampire, skeleton, grave, moon, etc. Don't forget to include words that don't exist in the film ! Alternatively the activity can be a "match the words to the pictures" activity.
eg. a skeleton
After Watching : An activity can be to note down the stages needed for filmmaking. For example,
Step 1: The idea for a film is born
Step 2 : Write the script
Step 3 : Visualise the characters and the mood in a storyboard
Step 4 : Prepare a screenplay
Step 5 : Recruit cast and crew
Step 6 : Prepare the set, costumes and props, equipment, music and make-up
Step 7 : Assemble the film
Step 8 : Release and go to the Premiere, walk the red carpet!
Step 9 : Your film becomes a blockbuster, a well-planned quality film, you become a millionaire and get the Oscar!!
The students can decide on their own what the stages of making a film are and work in teams to note them down. If their language level is not that high, an alternative idea is to give them the stages on jumbled strips of paper to put in the correct order.
Another activity is to research and make a list of the professionals involved in the process of filmmaking such as the director, the casting director, the location manager, the production manager, the director of photography, the production designer, the sound designer, the art director, the music composer, the choreographer and of course, the actors.
